How to smash being a mum and an entrepreneur

Balancing motherhood and business can be a challenge, but you don’t have to do it alone. Here are some insights and tips from our Freelance Mum Bath members on how networking can help you smash being a mum and an entrepreneur.

Take the plunge with networking

Have you been thinking about joining a networking group, but not got around to it yet? Have you tried networking, and felt like you didn’t fit in? Give Freelance Mum a try! Freelance Mum is inclusive, relaxed, a safe space to be your whole self, and it’s not scary. Plus, you can bring your children along if you want to.

A survey by UKNetworker [CH1] found that approximately 70% of small businesses reported that networking played a crucial role in securing new clients in 2023. We’re in no doubt that committed networking will result in new leads, but we also know that Freelance Mum does more than that—it provides support and friendship that can be hard to find elsewhere.

“The main way the Bath Hub, has helped is by providing such a strong support network. Being exposed to different people, making new contacts, hearing how other people do things and having space to bounce off ideas and share uncertainties has given me renewed energy, I’ve met some really inspiring people”.

Success looks different for everyone

Success isn’t the same for everyone. Some entrepreneurs are aiming for big business and rapid growth. Others want work-life balance and have a longer-term plan. Stay focused on what success is for you. The joy of networking with Freelance Mum is that you’ll meet all kinds of people, but nobody is judging. At the Bath Hub we welcome all mums in business, whatever their aspirations and at whatever stage they’re at.

Do something for your business every day

It doesn’t matter how small, just do one thing each day that will move your business forward. Arrange a 1:1, make a new connection, read an article, or listen to a Lunch & Learn. Over time, those small things will start to shape your business.

Be flexible

As mums, we can’t always work in a traditional way. And nor should we! Build your schedule around your family priorities, and don’t worry if that doesn’t look like 9-5. The joy of Freelance Mum is that you can bring your children with you to events, knowing they’ll fit right in and there’ll be plenty of people to lend a helping hand.

If you can’t make it to a netwalk, join us for an online Coffee Morning or the Digital Hub. Or do all three! At Freelance Mum you can join in with as much or as little as you can fit in each week.

Get value from your membership

With a Freelance Mum membership, you get a lot for your money. You can go to any of our netwalks with local hubs across the Southwest, join our weekly online Coffee Mornings, come to numerous member-led events and access The Mothership, our buzzing Facebook community.

You are part of a community that’s rich in knowledge, and connections, and always willing to offer support—lean on your network. You don’t need to wait for the next netwalk. If you need advice or a listening ear, get in touch with a fellow FM.

Freelance Mum is about more than finding new business. It’s a safe space to give and get support, offload, feel a sense of belonging and raise each other up.
